Connect with other disciplines and acquire information in order to use the language to function in academic and career-related situations Making Connections: Learners build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines while using the language to think critically and creatively to solve problems Focus of changes: -need to add purpose for making connections as well as emphasizing putting language in action — need to add 21st century skill of critical thinking and problem solving Paradigm Shift: Understanding and Implementing Change in Second Language Education Eight changes are: learner autonomy, cooperative learning, curricular integration, focus on meaning, diversity, thinking skills, alternative assessment and teachers as co-learners Key components on this shift . Focusing greater attention on: —           the role of learners, the move from teacher-centered instruction to learner-centered or learning-centered instruction. a move from product-oriented instruction to process-oriented instruction —           on the social nature of learning rather than on students as separate, decontextualized individuals; —           promoting holistic learning. —           helping students to understand the purpose of learning and develop their own purposes.
